How to Use the Calculator

The Commander Manabase Calculator analyzes your deck’s mana needs, not just its land count.

By looking at your commander, average mana cost, color intensity, and how demanding your spells are, it recommends a land breakdown that matches how your deck really plays — so you can cast spells on curve, hit your colors reliably, and stop losing games to your opening hand.

Step 1 – Type your commander’s name in the top search bar, the auto fill will kick in after a few seconds.

Step 2 – Choose your land package cost tier

  • Budget (maximum price of $5 per land)
  • Standard (maximum price of $10 per land)
  • Premium (no maximum price per land)

Step 3 – Enter your average CMC

CMC is just converted mana cost, which is th number of mana required to cast the card.

In the example below, Xenagos, God dof Revels costs 3 colorless, 1 green and 1 red, it’s converted mana cost would be 5

Add up each cards converted mana cost and divide by the number of non-land cards in your deck to get your deck’s converted mana cost. Enter that value in the calculator

Step 4 – Enter the number of lands you have in your deck

Step 5 – Count the number of colored pips (mana symbols) in the casting cost of the cards in your deck, enter each color in the appropriate field

Step 6 – Skim your deck for the cards in each color with the highest number of pips, enter the highest number of pips you have on a single card in the pip intensity fields.

Understanding Your Results

Your results are based on how your deck actually asks for mana, not just how many lands you’re running.

Here’s what the recommendations mean:

  • Total Lands
This reflects your deck’s average mana value, commander color requirements, and how early you need access to mana.
  • Color Breakdown
Each color is weighted based on how often it appears in mana costs across your deck — heavier color demands require more sources.
  • Dual & Multicolor Lands
When your deck needs multiple colors early or has intense color requirements, the calculator increases overlap using dual or tri-color lands to keep draws consistent.
  • High-Intensity Cards
Cards with multiple identical mana symbols (like three or four of the same color) require extra support — the calculator compensates so those spells are castable on time.
